Andal : In morning’s small hours

For some background on the 9th c. CE Tamil yogi Andal, see this post.

In morning’s small hours we came to adore
Those golden lotuses, your feet: why?
Born are we in the cowherd caste
But you must take us in your own employ.
Not only for today do we seek your drum
But for ever and ever, seven times seven births!
Would be one with you, work only for you —
Change all our other wishes, Lord!

Andal asks not for riches or blessings, but for a heart belonging wholly to the Beloved:
“Change all our other wishes, Lord!”

    And Jesus says:
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33)

    and:
“No man can serve two masters.” (Matthew 6:24)

Mullah Nasrudin would probably smile and say:
“If you chase two rabbits, both will escape.”
