Basava : Where they feed the fire

For more about this 12th c. CE Shaivite from south India, see this post.

In a brahmin house
where they feed the fire
as a god

when the fire goes wild
and burns the house

they splash on it
the water of the gutter
and the dust of the street,

beat their breasts
and call the crowd.

These men then forget their worship
and scold their fire,
O lord of the meeting rivers!

Translation : A.K.Ramanujan

    Jezus zegt:

“Hij laat zijn zon opgaan over goede en slechte mensen.” (Matteüs 5:45)

    Men vroeg aan Mullah Nasrudin:

    “Wat is het zuiverste vuur?”

    Nasrudin antwoordde:

    “Het vuur dat niemand voortrekt.”

“En wat doen de mensen daarmee?”

    Nasrudin glimlachte.

“Ze noemen het heilig wanneer het hen verwarmt,
en onrechtvaardig wanneer het hen verbrandt.”
