Feng-kan, or Big Stick (his name in translation) was one of the ‘Tientai trio’, including Hanshan (Cold Mountain) and Shih-te (Pickup), who lived at Kuoching Buddhist temple in the early 9th c. CE. Big Stick was said to have arrived at the temple riding a tiger, and had an imposing appearance, standing six feet tall and with long hair, rather than the shaved head of a monk.
