Guest Room : Why a temple?

The following are the notes for a sermon given by Inam Rodrigo Anda at a Universal Worship in Quito some weeks ago. In view of the Nur Lomas Alto project underway in that city (reported on most recently here), the theme of the sermon, building the temple of God, seems appropriate. For the sake of space the scriptures used in the service are not posted in full. The Spanish original notes follow the English translation.

What do we want to build a temple for?

This question went around in my head for a long time since we decided to embark on the project of building a temple, until the Light arrived and I saw clearly that I was confused. The heart is filled with gratitude for that.

Where is the temple of God?

Hazrat Inayat Khan gives us a clear clue when he says that he sought God everywhere, but finally found him hidden like a pearl in the shell of his heart.

And Jesus Christ also mentions it in his own words: you are Peter and on this stone I will build my Church (the community) , and the gates or the power of hell will not prevail against it.

If we close our eyes for a moment and concentrate on our hearts…  we can feel the Divine Presence and with a little luck, hear his voice.

In short, it is clear that the heart of man is the true temple of God.

So too, nature is the inspiring place to find it. Again a verse from Hazrat Inayat Khan makes it clear: “Pine-trees, for what are you made?
We are temples erected for the worshippers of God in nature.”

Now, when we feel that inner call that makes us happy but also distresses us, what should we do?

The main verse of the Hindu scriptures says it clearly: “Search for the Perfect Master alive, and give him your life when you find him; ask him to reveal to you the Knowledge of God and take refuge in His Grace.”

Moreover , the Zoroastrian scriptures clarify us about the message: “This, my message carries righteousness, perfection and immortality” and speaks of the duplication of the one who receives the message: “You who are Serenity, grant us our most dear desire, O Wise Lord, the power through which we can proclaim Your wise message … ”

Hazrat Inayat Khan had two purposes when he came to the West, the first to teach the depth of the Sufi path, and the second to deliver the Message of Peace, Harmony and Beauty.

Those who have received his call and have decided to become his disciples and follow him with all our heart and absolute sincerity, we must be clear that we have two responsibilities, to try to get as deep as possible in our hearts, seeking to be conscious of Unity , and to convey the message he brought to the world.

The Messenger brings a message for the world, but he delivers it to a few blessed people. That message fills them with immense joy, but also with a great responsibility: to transmit it to the people around them, just as the Messenger taught them.

The scriptures of Islam tell us: “As we send you a Messenger from among yourselves to transmit to you Our precepts and purify you and teach you the Book and wisdom, and teach you what you ignored, Allah does not demand from anyone beyond his possibilities.”

Then the question arises, how can we convey the message?

As Hazrat Inayat Khan says, the first is that each one gives his or her best in their surroundings, not with words but with acts that inspire people.

But there is something else. Hazrat Inayat Khan felt in his heart God’s request to build a temple for the Message, because it was very important for its dissemination, but he did not succeed. The Jewish scriptures can throw some light on the subject. God asked David to build a temple for the Ark of the Covenant (the Message of that time ).  From all the difficulties that happened, he failed to do so, but, by the grace of God, his son Solomon built the temple.

Once the temple had been built, in Solomon ‘s inauguration he said among other things a very important reason to build it :   When the stranger, who does not belong to the people of Israel, comes from a distant land for the sake of Thy name, (for they shall spread everywhere the fame of Your great Name and of Your powerful Hand, and of Your strong Arm) when he shall come, I say, and prays in this place, You will hear it from heaven, from that firmament in which You have Your dwelling place, and You will grant everything that the foreigner will beg you; so that all the peoples of the world learn to fear Your Name, like your people of Israel, and know from experience that Your Name is invoked in this house, which I have built.

Isn’t this a good reason?

It is also important to have a place where we can meet: “That those who have joined You in work, congregate to hear you, because You are the Lord of the true message, which set down the words of good mind. Of these words, Wise Lord, you are the first source. ” (Zarathustra)  Another good reason !

It will not be an easy road, but the Buddhist scriptures give us encouragement:   “Conquer the angry man through love; conquer the man of ill will through goodness; conquer the miser through generosity; conquer the liar through the truth.”

And they add, with respect to the attitude we should take: We should not consider the failures of others, or what others have done or failed to do, but our own acts, committed or omitted.

And Hazrat Inayat Khan with this metaphor inspires us :
Church-bell, what do you repeat?
The sacred Name of God,
which resounds through my whole being.
Church-bell, what do you proclaim?
I proclaim that every head which resounds like mine, spreads abroad the Message of God.
Church-bell, what makes you move? – The Word of God.

Also, in the Salat prayer, we always ask that the Messenger enlighten us and that God may allow the unity of all mankind .  ( Here Hazrat Inayat Khan summarizes in a brilliant way and in a few words the two reasons why he came to the West ) :
Thou comest on earth with the Message,
as a dove from above when dharma decayeth,
and speakest the word that is put into Thy mouth,
as the light filleth the crescent moon.
Let the star of the Divine Light shining in Thy heart
be reflected in the hearts of Thy devotees.
May the Message of God reach far and wide,
illuminating and making the whole humanity
as one single Brotherhood,
in the Fatherhood of God.

One of the things with which we can contribute our grain of sand to help in this purpose  seems to be to build a home for the message, a place full of light, of human warmth, of love, a place where the Sufis can come together, in community, to try to get closer to the Truth, and also so that people who feel the call of the message can go there, in order that, with the grace of God, the flame of Truth is may be kindled in their heart.

Finally, I would like to share this beautiful and inspiring verse of Gayan:
At the moment when I shall be leaving this earth, it is not the number of followers which will make me proud;
it is the thought that I have delivered His message to some souls that will console me,and the feeling that it helped them through life that will bring me satisfaction.
