Guru Nanak (1469 – 1539 CE) was an Indian spiritual teacher and the founder of the Sikh religion. This is taken from the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture of the Sikhs.
O Eternal, Unchanging, Benevolent Lord God,
O Sanctuary of the Saints,
Nanak humbly bows to You.
If there is birth, then there is death.
If there is pleasure, then there is pain.
If there is enjoyment, then there is disease.
If there is high, then there is low.
If there is small, then there is great.
If there is power, then there is pride
If there is egotistical pride, then there will be a fall.
Engrossed in worldly ways, one is ruined.
Meditating and vibrating on the Lord of the Universe in the Company of the Holy,
you shall become steady and stable.
Nanak vibrates and meditates on the Lord God.

Guru Nanak beschrijft de wereld van tegenstellingen: vreugde en verdriet, macht en val, hoog en laag.
Hazrat Inayat Khan leert dat wij niet worden geroepen om in die tegenstellingen verstrikt te raken, maar om harmonie te brengen. Zoals hij zegt: liefde ontwikkelt zich tot harmonie, en harmonie brengt schoonheid voort.
Daarom bidt Sint Franciscus:
“Waar haat is, laat mij liefde brengen.
Waar duisternis is, laat mij licht brengen.
Waar droefheid is, laat mij vreugde brengen.”
Misschien ligt juist daarin de standvastigheid waar Guru Nanak over spreekt: niet de tegenstellingen ontkennen, maar er een instrument van vrede en harmonie in worden.
