Lalleshwari or Lal Ded was a 14th c. Kashmiri yogini in the Shaivite tradition. She is deeply loved in Kashmir, both by Hindus and Muslims, and it is said that only two words have meaning there: Allah and Lalla. For more about her, see this previous post. This verse was written near the beginning of her journey.
Hey, mind, why are you attached
to the external world?
Why do you mistake
illusory for the real?
Lack of wisdom has won you over
to the wrong path–
resigned to coming and going,
death and rebirth.

Lalla begint niet met de vraag wat er mis is met de wereld. Zij spreekt haar eigen geest aan:
waarom houd je je vast aan het uiterlijke, en waarom zie je het illusoire voor het werkelijke aan?
Misschien begint wijsheid hier niet met het aanwijzen van de illusie buiten ons, maar met het herkennen van onze eigen hechting.
In een eerdere Inner Call over Lalla klonk:
“To memorize the scriptures is easy, to live them is hard.”
De leraar zei:
“Zie waar je je aan vasthecht. Laat het los.”
Mullah schreef het op.
De volgende dag vroeg de leraar:
“En?”
Mullah keek naar het briefje in zijn hand.
Hij glimlachte.
“Ik ben nog aan het oefenen.”
