Tales : Amir Khusrau meets his Pir

Amir Khusrau was a gifted musician and poet, and is remembered as the favourite mureed of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. His first meeting with his Pir was blessed, for it occurred in this way.

At the age of thirteen, young Amir accompanied his father who went to visit the khankah of the Sufi master. The father went inside, but the boy sat outside the gate and composed the following verse in his heart, putting a question before Hazrat Nizamuddin.
You are at the gate of that palace
Where even a dove becomes a hawk.
A poor traveller has arrived at your door.
Should he enter or should he return?

The saint perceived the verse and sent a mureed to the gate to give Amir this verse in reply:
You, the man of Reality,
Come inside so you may become my confidant.
But if the one who enters is foolish
He must return from whence he came
.

Then Amir knew he had found his spiritual guide.
