Tales : The just king

There was once upon a time in Persia a certain king who was known for his deep understanding of justice. In all his dealings he was fair and just, and for this he was deeply respected by his people. Nevertheless, there were those who opposed him – such is the nature of life.

One day, a wazir came to the king, and, saluting him with all courtesy, said, “Majesty, I have news. Today you may celebrate. Your worst enemy – the one who has sought in every way to throw you down – is dead.”

To the wazir’s surprise, though, the king did not rejoice. “Have you perhaps heard that I should be exempted from death, O Wazir?” said the king. “To celebrate the death of an enemy is foolish.”
