A certain king once said to a sage in his court, “Your wisdom has inspired me. I have been thinking deeply about life and my duties, and there are three attributes that I long to possess.”
“What are they, majesty?” the sage asked.
“The first is that I wish no man could commit a sin against me that I have not the power to forgive. The second is that none of those who ask boons of me should ask for what I am unable to give. And the third is that none should outlive me.”
When he heard these words, the sage laughed.
“Why do you laugh?” the king demanded.
“How can I help laughing?” the sage said. “You are longing for three qualities that only the Heavenly King possesses. God alone can forgive all, grant all, and outlive all.”
The king looked shocked, and then feeling ashamed, said, “It is true. How blind I have been. Hide my words, then, or all the court will laugh at me.”

De koning zei: “It is true. How blind I have been.”
Even later: “Hide my words, then, or all the court will laugh at me.”
Mullah glimlachte.
“Dat ken ik. Zodra ik iets van mezelf zie, hoop ik vooral dat niemand anders het gezien heeft.”
