It happened once upon a time that Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana were roaming in the forest. Rama had with him the great bow that was so large and stiff that no one else was able to string it. The two brothers stopped beneath the branches of a tree to enjoy the beauties of the forest, and Rama leaned his bow against the trunk of the tree.
When they were ready to go on, Rama took up the bow again and only then saw that it had been resting on a small frog. Lifting it up tenderly, Rama said, “Little brother, why did you not speak? Why did you not tell me you were being hurt by the weight of my bow?”
“Lord Rama,” the frog replied, “all my life I have been devoted to you. When others are unkind to me or hurt me, I call on you: Rama, Rama! But when it is you yourself who are the source of my pain, then who else could I call?”
