Sachal Sarmast: Don’t Follow

Sachal Sarmast was the pen-name of Abdul Wahab Farouqi (1739-1827 CE), a Sufi poet from Sindh who wrote in Urdu, Farsi, Arabic, Punjabi and several other languages.  His poems are still sung by local singers in parts of Pakistan.  His pen name can be roughly rendered as ‘the Ecstatic Saint of Truth.’  Like the mystic Ibn Arabi and the Punjabi poet Bullhe Shah, Sachal Sarmast was an ardent proponent of the ‘Unity of Existence’, which declares that there is only One, and all manifestation is merely a transient reflection  of that Existence.

Friend, this is the only method
to learn the secret way:

     Ignore the paths of others,
     even the saints’ steep trails.

          Don’t follow.
          Don’t journey at all.

Rip the veil from your face.
