A seeker by the name of Abdul Rahman came to Bahlool, saluted him and sat in silence. Bahlool said, “Shall I ask you a question?”
Abdul Rahman replied, “Yes, ask.”
Bahlool said, “What is generosity?”
Abdul Rahman answered, “Generosity is giving. Offering gifts.”
“That is generosity in the worldly sense,” Bahlool replied. “What is generosity in religion?”
Abdul Rahman replied, “It is dedicating oneself from one’s youth to the worship and service of God.”
Bahlool said, “And do you expect a reward for that?”
“Certainly,” said Abdul Rahman. “Religion teaches that we shall be repaid ten times for our efforts.”
“Then it is not generosity,” said Bahlool, “it is trade, commerce.”
“And what is generosity in your view?” Abdul Rahman asked.
“Generosity,” said Bahlool, “is that which occurs in your heart, and you seek nothing in return for it.”
