It happened once upon a time that a certain young man presented himself before a guru who was well known for teaching the path of compassion. After making proper salutations, he asked the guru for advice.
‘What is it that troubles you?” asked the guru.
“Guru-ji,” replied the young man, “By the recent passing away of my father, I have inherited his business. He was very shrewd in the ways of the world, and he built up a large enterprise. Hundreds of people now work for me. I feel this is a great responsibility, but I wonder how I can do this work and pursue the path of compassion that you preach.”
The guru smiled. “These hundreds who work for you – be kind to them.”
The young man frowned. “Guru-ji, how can a businessman think of being kind? My father was a hard man, who drove his workers without mercy. If they did not satisfy him, he threw them out. What is more, we have many competitors who would take advantage of the slightest weakness. How can I possibly apply your lesson of kindness?”
The guru gazed at the young man for a moment, and then said, “My son, it is possible to be kind to your workers if first you learn to like them.”
