For some background on the 10th c. CE Persian mystic Abul Hassan Kharqani, see this post.
Master said, “I begged my Creator to let me see myself as I am,
and behold, I saw an old, threadbare garment, unworthy of a glance,
and I asked, ‘Is this me?’
and I was reassured, ‘Yes, indeed!’
and I begged, ‘All of our moaning, devotion, longing and tears… what are those?’
and my Beloved said, ‘I
Am all that.'”
