This is a charming and instructive tale that Hazrat Inayat Khan sometimes told. The way in which it is given, concealing details about the child, the ‘guardian’ and the nature of the child’s wish, hint that it might have been one of Hazrat Inayat’s children and that he was the ‘guardian’ — but another possibility is that the child was Inayat himself.
