Glimpses: Nargis dreams of Murshid

Nargis Jessie Dowland (1866-1953) was an English mureed of Hazrat Inayat Khan and an early editor and publisher of his lectures.  The following is taken from her Notebook, which she kept between 1919 and 1927.  Other posts from her writings and memories may be found here and here.

Miss Dowland once dreamed that she saw Murshid sitting on one of the bridges across the Thames on a bench, with on either side a woman of the street, tired and asleep, resting against him.  She wondered why Murshid remained sitting like that. And she asked Murshid later on for an explanation.

Murshid gave the following explanation: “In my physical body I am limited as an ordinary man. How could I help those women, who were asleep on every level of their being, except by thought?  They could not even see me, nor would they have understood if they had.

“My work here is to find those who are already awake on the inner planes and to touch their souls that they may awaken on this to see through the veil of physical matter, and thus prepare a few sowers for the field of God, who may be trusted to sow the living seed, the fruit of which shall be for the healing of nations, the bread of life given without money and without price to all who ask.

“And in those days there shall be no starving bodies, for they are the result of starving souls. Labour and toil without ceasing to prepare the field for the sowing. And remember that the harvest hereof, other hands shall reap.”

“…a few sowers for the field of God, who may be trusted to sow the living seed, the fruit of which shall be for the healing of nations, the bread of life given without money and without price to all who ask”
These words of Murshid fill the heart with gratitude for him and for those who generously have sown in us the living seed, without asking for anything in return. May the Spirit of Guidance let us to continue the work.
