Namdev: The True Giver

Although Nadev’s devotional songs are loved and repeated by millions throughout the world, there is very little that we know for certain about his life.  Traditionally, he is said to have lived from 1270 to 1350 CE.  He was apparently born into a low-caste family of tailors in Maharashtra, although one hagiography, written centuries after his death, had him come floating miraculously down a river to an elderly, childless couple, a story that would eliminate the inconvenience of low-caste status for any upper-class devotees.  What is certain is that he wrote in the common language, and not in Sanskrit (a language used only by the priestly caste that effectively excluded other classes from spirituality); that his poems were created to be sung, making them easily accessible; and that he taught that all may find liberation through devotion to the One.  A number of songs either by Namdev or attributed to him are included in the Sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib.

The True Giver

The Lord alone is the Great Giver;
Mankind cannot give us anything.
Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.
Not recognizing this brings loss and frustration.
Many have proclaimed their sovereignty
Over the kingdoms here on the earth,
But they have all departed, alone, empty handed,
Dragged off with ropes through their noses.
The Lord alone is the Great Giver.
Make it your goal to focus your mind on Him.
Make it your calling to have faith in the true Name.
