Praying for the New Year

For a century or more, it has been a custom in the Sufi Movement for the members of a center to gather as the New Year approaches, and pray for blessings upon those who are close to their hearts. Each name is spoken aloud, followed by the word ‘Fazál’ (blessings), and then a gong, if available.

May the new number appearing on the calendar symbolise our awakening to the ever-present blessings of love, harmony and beauty. May all the children of God join hands and celebrate our one family with tenderness, forgiveness and peace.

May our hearts be new.

Prayer for the New Year
O Thou, who abidest in our hearts,
most merciful and compassionate God,
Lord of heaven and earth,
we forgive others their trespasses
and ask thy forgiveness of our shortcomings.
We begin this New Year
with pure heart and clear conscience,
with courage and hope.
Help us to fulfill the purpose of our lives
under Thy divine guidance.
Amen
