Mata Rupa Bhawani (ca. 1624 – 1721 CE) was born in what is present day Srinagar, and with Lal Ded is one of the great female mystic poets of Kashmir. Not much is known of her personal life. She was a devotee of the goddess Kali, but in keeping with the traditions of Kashmir, her poetry seems to synthesize strains of Sufi thought as well.

I did not come on this earth as a seed,
To fall in the circle of births;
I am not the elements
Earth, water, fire, air and ether.
I am beyond the primordial universal self and the individual self,
I am the Supreme Consciousness.
