Shabistari : A blind man won’t believe

For more about the 13th c. CE Persian mystic Mahmuyd Shabistari, see this post.

A blind man won’t believe what you say about colour
even if you spend a hundred years trying to prove it.

White, yellow, red, green and golden straw
will be nothing but black in front of this man.

Consider the sad state of the one born blind.
Will the oculist’s eye-black bring him remedy?

Reason trying to grasp the states of the other world
is like the one born blind trying to see in this world.

However humanity possesses a special faculty,
that he or she may come to know hidden secrets.

Like the potential for fire existing in flint and steel,
God has placed this faculty in spirit and body.

When these two strike together like flint and steel,
the light created illuminates the two worlds.

From that joining the mystery is revealed.
Since you’ve been informed, go reduce your ‘self.’

Your real ‘you’ is a copy of the divine design.
Seek from this self anything you may desire.
