The Eastern Orthodox mystic Symeon the New Theologian (949 – 1032 CE) was born into a wealthy family in what is now Turkey, and was destined for a life in politics, but mystical realisations changed the direction of his life. Although he endeavoured to fulfil his family’s hopes, eventually becoming an imperial senator, he renounced his worldly life at the age of 27 and became a monk. In time he was ordained a priest, and as the abbot of a large monastery attracted many followers.
As soon as your mind has experienced
what the scripture says:
“How gracious is the Lord,”
it will be so touched with that delight
that it will no longer want to leave the place of the heart.
It will echo the words of the apostle Peter:
“How good it is to be here.”
