Some said that Bahlool was only a fool, but the mighty Khalifa Haroun al Rashid was not so sure. He suspected that Bahlool was one of those illuminated souls who disguise themselves under the appearance of madness. Therefore, one day, hoping perhaps to receive some blessings, the Khalifa sent food to Bahlool from his own table.
The servant bearing the gift found Bahlool sitting in a deserted cemetery. His only companion was a stray dog.
“This is the Khalifa’s own special food,” the servant said, placing the gift before Bahlool. “He has especially sent it for you.”
Without a word Bahlool lifted the food and placed it before the dog that sat nearby.
The servant was scandalised. “What?” he demanded. “Do you give the Khalifa’s own food to a dog?”
“Be quiet!” Bahlool said. “If the dog hears it is the Khalifa’s food, he won’t eat it either.”
