The following observations, recounted for us by Kismet Stam, one of the Dutch mureeds and a secretary for Hazrat Inayat Khan, show some of the reactions of those who were impressed by the appearance or presence of the Master without understanding why. The second anecdote makes a reference to the Bengali poet, philosopher and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941 CE).
Murshid once said in connection with someone’s recognition of and faith in Rasul*: “His soul knows, but his mind troubles the vision of his soul.”
At one of the stations between Karachi and Lahore, a young, eager looking Hindu student came to the train window from which Murshid was looking out. Guided by his soul’s inclination, but following only what was known to his mind as highest and greatest in this world, he said, “Are you Tagore?”
* That is, faith in Hazrat Inayat Khan as the Messenger.
