Sachal Sarmast (1739 – 1827 CE) was born in Daraza, in the province of Sindh of what is now Pakistan, and although he never left his small village, he wrote poetry in seven languages which is still known and sung today. He was born Abdul Wahab, and after losing his father while still young, was raised by an uncle who also became his spiritual master. He lived a very simple life, and it is said that he was easily moved to ecstasy by music. He used the pen-name ‘Sachal’ or ‘truthful’ in his poetry, and admirers later conferred on him the epithet ‘Sarmast’ or ‘ecstatic.’
The heart which drinks from the Cup of Love,
That heart joyful and ecstatic remains,
That heart joyful and ecstatic remains.
The Truth of Allah is present, ever present.
When the heart, O master,
When the heart, O beloved master,
When the heart drinks from the Cup of Love,
That heart joyful and ecstatic remains.
The Truth is present, ever present.
Master, Truth is present, ever present.
