It happened once upon a time that Mullah Nasruddin met a travelling scholar, and they got into a conversation about morality.
“Morality,” said the scholar, ” is always thinking of the other person first. The illness of the world today is that each person thinks only of himself. Worse than wild beasts!”
Their conversation proved so interesting that at length they decided to have a meal together. Going to a nearby restaurant, they took their seats and asked the waiter what was available.
“We have fish, very fresh fish just caught this morning.”
This sounded fine to them. “Bring us two!”
In a little while the waiter returned with a platter on which rested two grilled fish. It was plain to see, however, that one fish was considerably larger than the other.
Without hesitation, Nasruddin took the larger fish and placed it on his plate.
Astonished, the scholar stared at Nasruddin in consternation. “After showing such an interest in morality, is this how you behave?”
“I beg your pardon?” said the Mullah. “What do you mean?”
“You took the larger fish! A selfish act! You are only thinking of yourself. By philosophy, and by the sacred teachings of religion, you should think of the other person first!”
“And in my place,” said the Mullah, “what would you have done?”
“I would have taken the smaller fish,” the scholar replied promptly.
“Very well,” said Nasruddn, sliding the platter toward the scholar. “Here it is. By the grace of the All-Providing, you have what you wished for.”
