It is said that the legendary sage Luqman was once in service to a certain king. The king had seen in various ways that Luqman was no mere slave, but an evolved being, and so he treasured Luqman’s presence, and did all he could to show his respect. The king even went so far as to offer his food to Luqman before he himself would eat.
One day, someone sent to the king a large melon as a gift. After admiring the present, the king had it sliced, and, as was his custom, first offered a slice to Luqman. Luqman ate it with every sign of enjoyment. Seeing his appreciation, the king offered him another slice, and another, until only one slice remained. Thinking that perhaps he should also taste the gift, the king took the last piece, but with the first bite he had a shock: the king discovered that the melon was unspeakably bitter, and he was unable to swallow even a mouthful.
“Luqman,” he said in astonishment. “How is it that you can eat such a bitter fruit? You even seemed to enjoy it! How can this be?”
“Majesty,” said Luqman, “you have shown so much kindness to me, how could I not accept what you offer? It is your generosity that turns the taste of bitter to sweet.”
