The Patient Heron/La Paciente Garza

The Patient Heron

Nawab’s brief but meaningful post for the first day of the year, entitled ‘Waiting and Hope’, reminded me of an experience I had many years ago, when I decided to retire from the company where I had worked for two decades, to find new opportunities in other fields.

My initial plans suddenly collapsed with the worldwide stock market crash in 2000. I had invested the money from my retirement package in stocks, part of them in the area of technology, whose sector was the most affected by financial speculation. Suddenly, I found that I was not going to receive the monthly money I had calculated to support my family for many years, since I lost a part of the money, fortunately not very large, and on the other hand, the interest paid by conservative portfolios of savings also fell to minimum levels. I decided to go back to work, and after much search I found a job that did not last long. It was clear that I should try to do something on my own, but not as an employee … but I did not know what to do! I tried counselling in my professional area but the sector was depressed, I knocked on doors, some things came out but they did not guarantee an income that would compensate for the large expenses I had to make to cover the basic needs of the family—food, health, shelter, and education.

The ancient Egyptians saw the heron as a symbol of the sun and of rebirth. Some view this as the origin of the phoenix, whose egg is found in its own ashes.

Amongst my activities, now too few for my worried, anxious mind, I had to go to pay the monthly bills of the house, and for that I went to a bank office that was on the beautiful campus of a university near the town where I lived. The river in its winding course was lined by old trees, and all this formed a charming setting that gave rest and solace. Looking at this lovely landscape, my mind stepped aside and as I walked, an unexpected state of contemplation came. My eyes focused on a white heron that remained still and motionless, standing on one leg, splitting the water like a reed that seemed to come out of the bottom of the river’s mud. I did not take my eyes off her as I approached her by the small road that followed the shore; there she was, unchanging, serene, waiting … and it happened! Just as I passed her, as if something very special wanted to show me the eloquent teaching of the next moment, the precious heron lowered her head and caught with her beak a magnificent red fish that was tossed back, and then made its way down her thin neck.

Waiting and hope…

I understood that I should leave my anxiety and anguish and put all my being in a state of waiting and hope. So it was. I surrendered, I knew that the gift was coming, it was only a matter of time, and soon after, my heart could recognize the fish that would come to my mouth, a business opportunity that for many years has been, thanks to the Divine Providence, the means of living for my family and employees.

La paciente garza

Juan Amin Betancur
