At a recent Universal Worship service held in Quito to celebrate the year-end, Baasit Patricio Carrillo gave the following sermon. The translation to English was kindly provided by Inam Anda; the original is below. For the sake of length, the scriptures are not given here, but Baasit quotes from them liberally, and we think they will not be missed. And, as Baasit says with a full heart, “May God bless us.”
En un reciente culto universal celebrado en Quito con motivo del fin de año, Baasit Patricio Carrillo pronunció el siguiente sermón. La traducción al inglés fue amablemente proporcionada por Inam Anda; el original se encuentra más abajo. Debido al espacio limitado, no se dan aquí las escrituras, pero Baasit las cita abundantemente, y creemos que no faltarán. Y, como dice Baasit con el corazón lleno: “Que Dios nos bendiga”.

Beloved brothers and sisters, 
We are gathered in the name of God.  We have brought ourselves to this place. Each of our hearts, beating, feeling, loving and wanting to find something more: wanting to take one more step on the path to Oneness.

Our souls, our hearts, our attention, aligned to feel something more of that which we know is there; that is, that manifests permanently, that presents itself in various forms, that enamors us, that blesses us. That treasure that we glimpse, long for, build and care for.

Apparently, the treasure we seek requires:
– Recognizing the divine and connecting with the spiritual.
– Following the path of virtue, kindness and generosity.
– Giving more importance to the spiritual and less to the material
– Acting with wisdom and understanding.

Recognizing the divine and connecting with the spiritual

The scriptures clearly speak of the spiritual connection and suggest that one can recognize the divine. Moreover, they say “You are the one to be known and at the same time you are the knower,” thus indicating that the apparent duality is in reality ONE, the unity: ONLY GOD IS!

In the Hindu scriptures we find the expression from the Whole: “I am the way and the master … your friend, your refuge, your abode of peace.”  And, wonderfully, we also find the wisdom written from the point of view of the particle. “You are the higher power that was from the beginning, the most valuable treasure that hides the universe”. 

The question that arises, perhaps is: Well, what now? How to contact this treasure that hides the universe? The reading of the scriptures of Islam give just an answer to this question posed in the reading of the Hindu scriptures: “I do not claim to possess the treasures of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I claim to be an angel.  I do but follow what has been revealed to me.” And they also ask us to reflect on the difference between the blind and the sighted.

The scriptures guide us and point out that the true treasure lies in recognizing the divine presence in each one of us and in all the things that surround us. That is the way to inner peace, to the understanding that we are part of a seed of eternity, a connection with the supreme.

GOD ALONE IS.

The path of virtue, kindness and generosity

The scriptures also speak to us of virtue, kindness and generosity.  The Zoroastrian scriptures highlight the importance of serving, caring for the needy and offering sacrifices with devotion and understanding.

The Buddhist scriptures further show us that true glory and wealth lie in faith and virtue. A virtuous man is honored wherever he goes; they say: his presence undoubtedly radiates the light of wisdom, the radiance of treasure. “If a man has faith and has virtue, then he has true glory and true treasure. Wherever this man goes, there he will be honored.”

The path to be traveled, say the scriptures, traverses the vast fields of generosity, kindness, and faith, and hearts perceive the one who travels the path. 

Detachment from the material and emphasis on the spiritual

Other passages we have heard, when mentioning the treasure, emphasize the spiritual and suggest at the same time a detachment from the material. 

The Jewish scriptures tell us that it is better to have little with a reverent and respectful love for God than to have great riches accompanied by confusion.   The Jewish scriptures remind us that, true joy is found in love and wisdom but not in anger or foolishness.  “A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of heart the spirit is cast down. A wise heart seeketh wisdom: but the mouth of fools feedeth on folly. All the days of the afflicted are hard: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.”

The Christian scriptures invite us to seek treasures in heaven, those treasures that last beyond this life. They remind us that our focus should be on love, faith and trust in God, who provides and clothes “the birds of the air and the lilies of the field“.

The Christian scriptures provide us with this profoundly significant gem: Is not life more than food, and the body more than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air, which neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feeds them: are ye not of much more value than they? And which of you, however much he may labour, can add to his stature one cubit? And for clothing, why are you so anxious? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin: but I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of them. And if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye men and women of little faith?

The Christian scriptures leave us with this message which is perhaps the central theme of today’s sharing: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also“.

How much has been said in this regard!  How much to learn in such a short phrase! “where your treasure is, there is your heart“. Where is your treasure? Ask yourself at this moment if you have not done so before; ask yourself: Where is my treasure? What is my treasure? 

Embrace the answer that comes to you, follow it, dig deep! … By paying attention right now to that treasure within you, you are contacting your heart, feel it. Your heart is the dwelling place of God, enter, that is your dwelling place.

The importance of wisdom and understanding

This understanding, perhaps a new understanding, surely allows you to vibrate with the message of the Gayan. Waves: We are Upsaras of the ocean.  When the wind plays music, we dance; earth’s treasure is not of our seeking;  our reward is Indra’s one glance. 

We are these celestial spirits of grace and beauty, free, dancing under the gaze of the king of the gods, the lord of the heavens! And this new understanding surely, also allows us to understand that. “He who has spent has used;  he who has collected has lost;  but he who has given  has saved his treasure forever.”

Thus, brothers and sisters, we see how that treasure we seek lives in each one of us, it expresses itself in our actions, in our focus and when we put our consciousness on it, when we contact our inner self we find fullness, peace, love, harmony and beauty.

Let us remember that our actions define our true wealth. Let us cultivate generosity, understanding and kindness in our hearts. Let us remember that, therein lies the true treasure: in compassion and love for ourselves and others.

May we find fulfillment in recognizing the divinity in each being and in sharing our treasures with the wo rld.The path to a full and meaningful life is the connection with the divine, it is the contact with our spiritual treasure. By finding our treasure we arrive at the door of our heart.

Amados Hermanos,
Estamos reunidos en el nombre de Dios.  Nos hemos traído a este lugar. Cada uno de nuestros corazones, latiendo, sintiendo, amando y queriendo encontrar algo más; queriendo dar un paso más en el camino hacia la Unidad.

Nuestras almas, nuestros corazones, nuestra atención, alineados para sentir algo más de aquello que sabemos que está, que es, que se manifiesta permanentemente, que se presenta en diversas formas, que nos enamora, que nos bendice, ese tesoro que vislumbramos, anhelamos, construimos y cuidamos.

Al parecer, el tesoro que buscamos requiere:
– Reconocer lo divino y conectar con lo espiritual
– Seguir el sendero de la virtud, la bondad, la generosidad
– Dar más importancia a lo espiritual y menos a lo material
– Obrar con sabiduría y comprensión

Reconocer lo divino y conectar con lo espiritual

Las escrituras hablan claramente de la conexión espiritual y sugieren que se puede reconocer lo divino, es más, dicen “Tú eres el que ha de ser conocido y al mismo tiempo eres el conocedor”. Indicando así, señalando que la aparente dualidad es en realidad UNO, la unidad:     ¡SOLO DIOS ES!

En las escrituras Hindús encontramos la expresión desde el todo: “Yo soy el camino y el maestro … tu amigo, tu refugio, tu morada de paz”  Y, maravillosamente, también encontramos la sabiduría escrita desde punto de vista de la partícula: “Eres el poder superior que estaba desde el principio, el más valioso tesoro que esconde el universo” 

La pregunta que surge, quizá es: Bueno, ¿y ahora? ¿Cómo contactar ese tesoro que esconde el universo? La lectura de las escrituras del Islam dan justamente una respuesta a esta pregunta planteada en la lectura de las escrituras Hindús  “Yo no pretendo poseer los tesoros de Alá, ni conozco lo oculto, ni pretendo ser un ángel.  No hago si no seguir lo que se me ha revelado” y piden, además, reflexionar la diferencia entre el ciego y el que ve.

Las escrituras nos orientan y señalan que el verdadero tesoro reside en reconocer la presencia divina en cada uno de nosotros y en todas las cosas que nos rodean, ese es el camino hacia la paz interior, hacia la comprensión de que somos parte de una semilla de eternidad, una conexión con lo supremo.

SOLO DIOS ES.

El sendero de la virtud, la bondad y la generosidad

Las escrituras nos hablan también de la virtud, la bondad y la generosidad  En las escrituras de Zoroastro se resalta la importancia de servir, de cuidar a los necesitados y de ofrecer sacrificios con devoción y comprensión.

Las escrituras Budistas nos muestran además que la verdadera gloria y riqueza radican en la fe y la virtud. Un hombre virtuoso es honrado donde quiera que vaya dicen: su presencia sin duda irradia la luz de la sabiduría, el brillo del tesoro. “Si un hombre tiene fe y tiene virtud, entonces tiene verdadera gloria y un verdadero tesoro. Donde quiera que vaya este hombr allí será honrado”

El sendero por recorrer, dicen las escrituras, atraviesa los inmensos campos de la generosidad, la bondad, la fe y los corazones perciben a quien recorre el camino. 

Desapego de lo material y énfasis en lo espiritual

Otros pasajes que hemos escuchado, cuando mencionan al tesoro, hacen énfasis en lo espiritual y sugieren al mismo tiempo un desapego de lo material 

Las escrituras Judías nos dicen que es mejor tener poco con un reverente y respetuoso amor a Dios que tener grandes riquezas acompañadas de confusión.   Nos recuerdan las escrituras Judías que, la verdadera alegría se encuentra en el amor y la sabiduría mas no en la ira o la necedad.  “El corazón alegre hermosea el rostro; Mas por el dolor del corazón el espíritu se abate.  El corazón entendido busca la sabiduría; Mas la boca de los necios se alimenta de necedades. Todos los días del afligido son difíciles; Mas el de corazón contento tiene un banquete continuo”

Las escrituras Cristianas nos invitan a buscar tesoros en el cielo, aquellos tesoros que perduran más allá de esta vida. Nos recuerdan, que nuestro enfoque debe estar en el amor, la fe y la confianza en Dios, quien provee y viste a “las aves del cielo y los lirios del campo”.

Las escrituras Cristianas nos brindan esta joya que marca profundamente: ¿No es la vida más que el alimento, y el cuerpo más que el vestido? Mirad las aves del cielo, que no siembran, ni siegan, ni recogen en graneros; y vuestro Padre celestial las alimenta. ¿No valéis vosotros mucho más que ellas? ¿Y quién de vosotros podrá, por mucho que se afane, añadir a su estatura un codo? Y por el vestido, ¿por qué os afanáis? Considerad los lirios del campo, cómo crecen: no trabajan ni hilan; pero os digo, que ni aun Salomón con toda su gloria se vistió así, como uno de ellos. Y si la hierba del campo que hoy es, y mañana se echa en el horno, Dios la viste así, ¿no hará mucho más a vosotros, hombres y mujeres de poca fe?

Las escrituras Cristianas nos dejan este mensaje que quizá es el tema central del compartir de hoy “donde esté vuestro tesoro, allí estará también vuestro corazón”.

¡Cuánto se ha dicho a este respecto!  ¡Cuánto por aprender en una frase tan cortita!  “en donde está tu tesoro, ahí está tu corazón” ¿Dónde está tu tesoro? pregúntate en este momento si no lo has hecho antes, pregúntate: ¿Dónde está mi tesoro? ¿Cuál es mi tesoro? 

Abraza la respuesta que llega a ti, síguela, ¡profundiza! … Al poner atención en este momento en ese tesoro, dentro de ti, estás contactando tu corazón, siéntelo, tu corazón es la morada de Dios, entra, esa es tu morada

La importancia de la sabiduría y la comprensión

Esta comprensión, quizá un nueva comprensión, con seguridad te permite vibrar con el mensaje del Gayan: Olas: Somos Upsaras del océano. Cuando el viento entona su música, danzamos. Nuestra búsqueda no son los tesoros de la tierra; nuestra recompensa es la mirada de Indra. 

¡Somos estos espíritus celestiales de gracia y belleza, libres, danzando bajo la mirada del rey de los dioses, del señor de los cielos!

Y esta nueva comprensión seguramente, también permite comprender que “Aquel que ha gastado ha usado; aquel que ha acumulado ha perdido; pero aquel que ha dado, ha salvado su tesoro para siempre”

Así, hermanos y hermanas, vemos como ese tesoro que buscamos vive en cada uno, se expresa en nuestros actos, en nuestro enfoque y cuando ponemos nuestra conciencia en él, cuando contactamos nuestro interior encontramos la plenitud, la paz,

El amor, la armonía y la belleza.

Recordemos que, nuestras acciones definen nuestra verdadera riqueza. Cultivemos la generosidad, la comprensión y la bondad en nuestros corazones. Recordemos que, ahí radica el verdadero tesoro: en la compasión y amor hacia nosotros mismos y hacia los demás.

Que podamos encontrar la plenitud al reconocer la divinidad en cada ser y al compartir nuestros tesoros con el mundo. El camino hacia una vida plena y significativa es la conexión con lo divino, es el contacto con nuestro tesoro espiritual. Encontrando nuestro tesoro llegamos a la puerta de nuestro corazón.
