Sarmad : Every man who knows his secret

The following verse is by the ecstatic dervish Sufi Sarmad, also known as Sarmad Kashani (ca. 1590-1661 CE). In the second verse, ‘Ahmad rose to the heavens’ refers to the Miraj or night journey, during which, according to orthodox Muslim teaching, the Prophet Mohammed journeyed physically to the heavens. In Sarmad’s view, evidently, it was an inner journey. For more about Sarmad, see this earlier post.

Every man who knows his secret
becomes a secret,
     hidden from the skies.

The sage says Ahmad rose to the heavens;
Sarmad says the heavens
     rose in him!
