In the tradition of Islam, it is said that when God created the first man, He commanded the angels to prostrate themselves before His new creation, and all but one angel, Iblis, did so. Iblis declared that he was made of fire, and was superior to a creature made of clay; therefore he refused. For his rebellion, God banished Iblis from heaven, and condemned him to hell.
It is also said that, at this command, Iblis became so excited and filled with joy that he swelled to fill the whole world by himself. Someone asked him, “How can you behave in this way? You have been driven from the Divine Presence!”
Iblis replied, “By this robe of honour the Beloved has singled me out; neither an angel who has been brought near to the Throne wears it, nor a prophet who has been sent forth.”
