Once a devotee began to study with a certain guru. He was sincere and eager, and after some time the guru said to him, “Now you are ready, so I am going to teach you the Holy Name. If you repeat this Name, liberation is assured. But be warned. If you give the name to anyone without permission, your next rebirth will be in hell.”

The student received the teaching, bowed in reverence, and then went to the nearby temple. There he climbed up on the roof and began to shout to the crowds of people below.

“Listen everyone! I’m going to tell you the name of God! Repeat it and you will be liberated!” And then as loudly as he could he shouted the sacred name, so that hundreds of people heard it.

Later, the guru asked him, “Why did you ignore my warning? Now a terrible future awaits you.”

The student replied, “I am prepared to go to hell a hundred times if it will save the suffering of some others.”
